Laser hair removal uses precisely targeted light to heat and disable the hair follicles, reducing hair growth over a course of sessions. It is one of the most popular longer-term alternatives to shaving, waxing and threading – smoother skin with far less regrowth, and fewer ingrown hairs and razor bumps along the way.
At ACTYMED it is performed under medical supervision by our She Clinic team, using a laser and settings matched to your skin type – important for Indian and darker skin tones, where the right wavelength and technique make treatment both safe and effective. We are honest about what it delivers: long-term hair reduction rather than a guaranteed permanent, once-and-done result. Laser hair removal is currently available at our Thodupuzha clinic only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it permanent?
Honestly, the correct term is long-term hair reduction, not permanent removal. A proper course markedly and lastingly reduces hair, and many people stay smooth for long periods – but some follicles recover over time, and hormonally driven hair (for example in PCOS) often needs occasional maintenance sessions. We set realistic expectations rather than over-promising.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually six to eight sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart. This is because the laser only affects hairs that are in their active growth phase at the time, and not all follicles are active at once – so repeated, spaced sessions are needed to catch them across their cycle. Maintenance sessions may follow.
Is it safe for Indian and darker skin?
Yes, when done correctly. Older lasers struggled with darker skin, but modern devices and appropriate wavelengths (such as Nd:YAG) treat brown and darker skin safely and effectively. The key is matching the laser and settings to your skin type and having it done by trained staff under medical supervision – which is exactly how we deliver it.
How should I prepare, and what happens afterwards?
Before: shave the area (do not wax, pluck or thread beforehand – the laser needs the root in place), and avoid sun exposure and tanning. Afterwards: mild redness like a light sunburn is normal for a short while; avoid sun, heat (hot showers, sauna, gym) and harsh products for a day or two, and use sunscreen. Simple, low-downtime aftercare.
Which hair and skin does it work best on?
It works best on dark hair, because the laser targets the pigment in the follicle. Very light, grey, white or red hairs have little pigment and respond poorly – we will tell you honestly if your hair type is unlikely to respond well, rather than starting a course that will not deliver.
Who should not have it, or should wait?
It is deferred in pregnancy, over active skin infection or inflammation in the area, on recently tanned or sun-exposed skin, with certain photosensitising medications, over tattoos in the treatment area, and shortly after isotretinoin. We screen for these first and advise the right timing.
Which ACTYMED clinic offers laser hair removal?
For now, laser hair removal is available only at our Thodupuzha clinic. If you are attending Perumbavoor or Kottarakkara, contact us and we will guide you on booking at Thodupuzha.
