Bloodletting by Cupping

Duration: 20-30 minutes · Ayurvedic Sports Medicine, Physiotherapy and Rehab, Panchakarma

Overview

Bloodletting by cupping is a targeted therapeutic bloodletting technique that uses cup suction, after small superficial punctures, to remove a controlled, small quantity of blood from a specific area. It overlaps with the Ayurvedic concept of Raktamokshana – the removal of vitiated blood – and is directed at particular blood- and pitta-related or congested local conditions rather than used as a general therapy.

At ACTYMED it is a doctor-performed, strictly hygienic procedure with careful patient selection. It is chosen for specific indications such as localised inflammation and congestion or gout-type conditions, and is closely related to our Ayurvedic Raktamokshana service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it performed?

After assessing suitability, the target area is cleaned, small superficial punctures are made, and a cup is applied to draw out a small, controlled amount of blood. The site is then cleaned and dressed, and single-use sterile equipment is used throughout.

How is it different from Wet Cupping?

Wet cupping is a broader regional therapy for pain and tension; bloodletting by cupping is more targeted therapeutic bloodletting for specific conditions that call for removing a small amount of blood from a defined site.

Which conditions is it used for?

Localised inflammation and congestion, gout and vatarakta-type conditions, and certain localised skin complaints – selected case by case.

Who should avoid it?

People with bleeding disorders or on blood thinners, anaemia, generalised swelling, uncontrolled diabetes, active infection, pregnancy, and the frail. Screening is essential.

How does it relate to Raktamokshana?

It is one method of Raktamokshana (bloodletting) using cup suction; our Ayurvedic Raktamokshana service also includes methods such as leech therapy, chosen to suit the condition.
