Mathravasthi is a gentle oil enema – a type of Sneha Vasti in which a small (matra) dose of warm medicated oil is administered rectally. It is regarded as the safest form of Vasti: it can be given even to the weak, the elderly, children and busy athletes, does not require a strict dietary regimen afterwards, and is said to nourish and stabilise vata without complications.
At ACTYMED it is used for vata-related conditions – low back pain, sciatica, joint pain and dryness – and as a well-tolerated recovery and strengthening therapy. Because it is mild, it is often chosen where a full cleansing Vasti is not needed or not suitable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is it performed?
Preparation (purva karma): a light abhyanga and mild fomentation over the lower back and abdomen may be given. Main procedure (pradhana karma): a small measured dose of warm medicated oil is administered rectally and retained comfortably. Aftercare (paschat karma): normal light activity is allowed – unlike stronger Vastis, no elaborate dietary regimen is needed.
Which conditions is it used for?
Low back pain, sciatica, degenerative joint pain, vata-type dryness and stiffness, general debility and athletic recovery.
How is it different from Niruha Vasti?
Mathravasthi is a small oil dose, mild and safe for daily or frequent use; Niruha Vasti is a larger decoction-based cleansing enema given under stricter conditions.
Who should avoid it?
It has relatively few restrictions, but it is deferred in acute diarrhoea, significant indigestion and certain abdominal conditions, and is always given after assessment.
How often can it be done?
It can be repeated frequently, even daily for a set period, as advised.
