Panchakarma — “five actions” — is classical Ayurveda’s structured protocol for deep cleansing and restoration. It is not a single treatment but a supervised, individually prescribed programme in three phases: preparation (purvakarma — internal and external oleation with therapies like Abhyanga and swedana), elimination (the classical procedures, most commonly Virechana — therapeutic purgation — and Vasti — medicated enemas, selected per your constitution and condition), and rejuvenation (paschatkarma — graded diet, rasayana medicines and lifestyle rebuilding).
Done properly, Panchakarma is a medical protocol: it requires assessment, individual prescription, monitoring, and a proper post-programme diet. That is exactly how it runs at ACTYMED — designed and supervised by our doctors, with in-patient care available at Thodupuzha under our Panchakarma department’s IP in-charge. We use it for chronic musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions, metabolic and skin disorders, and deep restoration after long illness or sustained overload.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Panchakarma programme take?
Typically 7 to 21 days depending on the prescription — shorter focused programmes for recovery and wellness, longer classical protocols for chronic disease. The phases cannot be rushed; the preparation phase is what makes the elimination phase safe and effective.
Do I need to stay in the clinic?
In-patient admission at our Thodupuzha facility is recommended for full classical programmes, where diet, rest and therapies are controlled. Selected shorter protocols can run out-patient with strict home guidance.
Is Panchakarma safe?
Under proper medical supervision, yes — that qualifier matters. The elimination procedures are real physiological interventions, which is why we assess cardiac status, blood pressure, blood sugar and general strength before prescribing, and why certain patients (pregnancy, significant heart disease, frail states, active GI bleeding) are not candidates.
What does the research say?
Whole-system Ayurvedic protocols including Panchakarma have been studied with encouraging results — including a double-blind trial in rheumatoid arthritis (Furst et al., Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, 2011) finding classical Ayurvedic treatment comparable to methotrexate on symptom measures, and observational studies reporting improvements in quality-of-life and metabolic markers. Large definitive trials are still lacking, and we say so — while noting the protocol’s long classical pedigree and our institutional experience.
Will I lose weight during Panchakarma?
Some do, but weight loss is not the goal — restoration is. Where weight is the target we combine selected Panchakarma elements with our nutrition-led weight-management programme.
How should I prepare?
Book a consultation first. Your doctor maps your constitution, condition and fitness for the programme, then prescribes the phases, therapies, medicines and diet — no two programmes are identical.
