Vaitharana Vasthi

Duration: 30-45 minutes · Panchakarma, Ayurvedic Orthopaedics

Overview

Vaitharana Vasti is a specialised cleansing (Niruha) enema formulated specifically for joint disease with ama – the classical recipe combines tamarind, jaggery, rock salt, cow’s urine (gomutra) and oil. This particular combination is directed at Amavata (a rheumatoid-type arthritis) and vata-kapha joint conditions where stiffness, swelling and metabolic sluggishness dominate.

At ACTYMED it is offered within supervised Panchakarma programmes for inflammatory and degenerative joint disease. Because it contains cow’s urine as a classical ingredient, patients are told about the composition beforehand so they can make an informed choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it performed?

Preparation (purva karma): preparatory oleation and fomentation are given as needed. Main procedure (pradhana karma): the Vaitharana blend is prepared and administered rectally as a Niruha Vasti, retained and then passed. Aftercare (paschat karma): rest and a light, warming diet follow, and it is delivered as part of a scheduled series with monitoring.

Which conditions is it used for?

Amavata (rheumatoid-type arthritis), osteoarthritis, gout, sciatica and vata-kapha joint disease with stiffness and ama.

How is it different from ordinary Niruha Vasti?

It is a specific formulation – tamarind, jaggery, salt, cow’s urine and oil – designed for joint disease with ama, rather than a general cleansing decoction.

Who should avoid it?

As with other Niruha Vastis – acute fever or diarrhoea, severe debility, pitta-type burning inflammation, bleeding conditions, certain abdominal conditions and pregnancy. It is given only after assessment and under supervision.

Is the cow’s urine ingredient discussed beforehand?

Yes – the classical composition is explained in advance so patients can give informed consent.
