Meniscus Tear

Targeted treatment for meniscus tears to settle locking, swelling and pain — often without surgery.

Overview

The menisci are two C-shaped pads of cartilage that cushion and stabilise the knee, absorbing shock between the thigh bone and shin bone. A meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries — caused either by a sudden twist during sport or by gradual, age-related wear.

At ACTYMED Healthcare, our sports-medicine and rehabilitation team accurately identifies the type and location of the tear and, crucially, whether it sits in the part of the meniscus that can heal. A large proportion of meniscus tears settle well with the right loading programme, manual therapy, and Ayurvedic pain management — avoiding unnecessary surgery. Where a tear genuinely needs surgical attention, we prepare you for it and lead your rehabilitation afterwards.

Our goal is a knee that bends, straightens and loads fully again — without the catching, locking or swelling that a meniscus tear brings.

How We Treat It

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a meniscus tear heal without surgery?

Often, yes. Tears in the outer third of the meniscus have a good blood supply and can heal with conservative treatment. Even many tears that cannot fully knit together become pain-free and functional with the right rehabilitation, so surgery is far from automatic.

What is the difference between a sports tear and a degenerative tear?

A sports (acute) tear usually follows a specific twisting injury in a younger, active person. A degenerative tear develops gradually as the cartilage wears with age and may appear with little or no trauma. The treatment approach differs, which is why accurate diagnosis matters.

How long is recovery from a meniscus tear?

With conservative treatment, many people improve significantly within 6–12 weeks. Recovery after arthroscopic surgery ranges from a few weeks for a simple trim to a few months for a repair that must heal.

Should I keep exercising with a meniscus tear?

Gentle, guided movement usually helps more than complete rest, but the wrong loading can aggravate a tear. We give you a specific, progressive programme rather than a blanket “rest” or “push through” instruction.
