Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Oil Massage)

Duration: 45-60 minutes · Panchakarma, Ayurvedic Sports Medicine

Overview

Abhyanga is Ayurveda’s signature therapy: a rhythmic, full-body massage using generous quantities of warm herbal-medicated oil, selected according to your constitution (prakriti) and current condition. Classical texts describe it as nourishing the tissues, calming vata (the dosha governing movement and the nervous system), improving circulation and preparing the body for deeper treatments.

In modern terms, Abhyanga combines the well-documented effects of therapeutic massage — improved local circulation, reduced muscle tension, down-regulation of the stress response — with the sustained warmth and lubrication of medicated oils. At ACTYMED it is used for muscle recovery in athletes, chronic stiffness, stress-related tension, and as the standard preparation (purvakarma) before therapies like Podikizhi and Panchakarma programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during an Abhyanga session?

You lie on a traditional treatment table while one or two therapists apply warm medicated oil in long, rhythmic strokes over the whole body, typically for 45–60 minutes, often followed by gentle steam (swedana) to help the oil work deeper. You’ll be draped appropriately throughout.

Which oil is used?

That is the medical part: our doctors select the oil — such as Ksheerabala, Mahanarayana or Dhanwantharam formulations — based on your constitution, condition and the goal of treatment. This selection is why clinic Abhyanga differs from a spa oil massage.

Is there scientific evidence for Abhyanga?

A published pilot study (Basler, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2011) found a single Abhyanga session significantly reduced subjective stress and, in high-stress subjects, blood pressure. Beyond that, massage therapy itself has broader evidence for short-term relief of low back pain and anxiety. We present Abhyanga honestly: strong classical grounding, growing but still early modern research.

How often should I have it?

For recovery and stress, weekly or fortnightly sessions work well. As preparation for Panchakarma, it is done daily for a prescribed number of days.

Who should avoid Abhyanga?

It is deferred during fever or acute illness, over broken or infected skin, immediately after heavy meals, and in people with acute deep vein thrombosis. Oil allergies are screened beforehand.

Is it suitable for athletes?

Yes — it is one of our most-used recovery therapies for athletes in heavy training, easing global muscle soreness and supporting sleep, without interfering with the training programme.
