Can I keep running with shin splints?
Often yes, in modified form – and it is usually better than complete rest. We use a pain-monitoring approach (keeping pain within agreed limits during and after runs) with reduced volume and intensity, progressing as the bone and calf capacity rebuild. Complete rest is reserved for cases where even walking hurts or a stress reaction is suspected.
How do I know it is not a stress fracture?
The pattern matters: shin splints hurt over a diffuse stretch of the inner border (5 cm or more) and often ease as you warm up; stress fractures hurt at one focal point, get worse through a run, may ache at night, and hopping on one leg is often impossible. If your pain has focused to one spot, stop running and get assessed – imaging is sometimes needed to be sure.
Are my shoes the cause?
Occasionally a contributor, rarely the whole cause. Worn-out cushioning and a sudden change of footwear type can add bone load, but the dominant factor in almost every case is the training-load spike. We advise on footwear honestly – as one variable among several, not a magic fix.
Why do my shin splints keep coming back?
Because rest treats the pain, not the reason. If calf capacity, running mechanics and load habits are unchanged, the same overload happens again. Lasting resolution comes from strengthening, graded re-loading and often a cadence adjustment – which is exactly what our programme rebuilds.
Is surgery ever indicated for shin splints?
Essentially never for true MTSS. Rare surgical situations exist in the differential diagnoses – a non-healing high-risk stress fracture, or proven chronic exertional compartment syndrome that has failed conservative care – which is one more reason accurate diagnosis comes first. For shin splints itself, the honest answer is load management and rehabilitation, not procedures.
How long until I am back to full training?
Caught early, 2-4 weeks of modified loading often suffices. Established cases typically need 6-12 weeks of graded running and strengthening. If a stress reaction is found, bone-healing timelines apply. We will give you a realistic timeline after grading yours.
